With the help of her three kids, super-mum Kylie Matthews founded, owns, and operates Kai Carrier – a company that manufactures reusable food pouches designed to make feeding on the go easy and waste free.
When her eldest child was 7 months old, Kylie purchased some of the ever-popular baby food pouches from the supermarket; they were easy and convenient, but were against everything she stood for. Being very environmentally conscious, Kylie was horrified at the thought of the sheer volume of single-use plastic ending up in landfills from that product alone. After doing her research and finding no reusable food pouches on the market, Kai Carrier was born.
“It is important for me that my children get to grow up in a world where they can swim in the ocean, catch fish, see wildlife, and play on a beach not littered with plastic waste and rubbish.”
They started with one pouch and now produce a whole range of reusable food packaging that replaces single-use pouches, food wraps, and bags. Every product is BPA, PVC and Phthalate free, freezable, dishwasher safe, and recyclable. And there’s a new product in the pipeline, so watch this space!
They can be used to store healthy homemade baby food or breast milk, but they’re not just for babies – the pouches can store smoothies, yogurt or soup for a healthy snack on the go, and the bags can be used for sandwiches, crackers, fruit etc. for anyone in the family to take to school or work.
“To date, Kai Carrier products have prevented over 12.2 million pieces of single use plastic ending up in landfills – that equates to 4.9 Tonnes of rubbish!”
Kylie and her family live by the mantra ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ and make a big effort to cut down their waste output and live as sustainably as possible. They grow their own veggies, compost their food scraps, collect rainwater for the garden, and educate their children about how to live sustainably. It’s making significant changes like this that really cut down on your environmental footprint, and it’s not as hard as you might think. Making a small change like not buying single use plastic products can make a HUGE difference.
